LA 6th Inf Co I. CSA. Residence: Chicago, Illinois. Born Edvard Gundersen Ostmo on 29 Dec 1837 in Solor, Norway. To US 1859 to Wisconsin. Worked in lumber camps until the spring of 1860. Started for Pike’s Peak to search for gold. At Hannibal, Missouri, he met miners returning from Colorado who were broke and starving. Gunderson went to St. Louis and worked at odd jobs for a few weeks and then took passage on a boat to New Orleans, where he worked as a laborer. Civil War: Drafted. Enrolled at New Orleans on 21 Mar 1862. He was then 25 and unmarried, with blue eyes, auburn hair and a florid complexion, 5’9”. Private. Sent to join the LA 6th Inf. The Regiment was already in Virginia. He was captured by Union troops at Fredericksburg, Virginia, 3 May 1863 and sent to Fort Delaware, Delaware. Exchanged 23 May 1863 at City Point, Virginia. He was wounded at Gettysburg on 2 Jul 1863. Escaped capture and was with his company through April 1864. Captured at the Battle of the Wilderness, Pine Run, Virginia, on 5 May 1864 and sent to Point Lookout prison, Maryland; then transferred to Elmira, New York, until the war ended and he was released on 19 Jun 1865. Post war: He married in 1873 to Olivia Kalgaarden. Seven children. He moved to Kensett, Worth County, Iowa, and died there on 27 Jan 1924. He is buried at Elk Creek cemetery west of Kensett. Was on Military Police duty in July 1862. Wounded at Stone’s River, Tennessee, 31 Dec 1862, and sent to hospital in Nashville, Tennessee. Served as an orderly there on 13 Feb 1863. Was on recruiting duty in November 1863. Wounded in his head at Bald Knob (Kennesaw Mountain), Georgia, 20 Jun 1864 and sent to hospital. Promoted to Sergeant on 1 Sep 1864. Mustered out with K Company at Chattanooga, Tennessee, on 10 Feb 1865. Post war: Became Sheriff of Worth County in 1871 and served four years. On 3 Jan 1873, he married Randi Medgarden. Nine children. In 1892, Hundeby was a merchant in Northwood, Iowa, operating a drug store. From 1894 to 1898, he was County Treasurer. He was still in Northwood in 1906. Moved to Los Angeles, California, where he died on 21 Nov 1915. Enlisted for three years on 11 Jan 1864 at Madison, Wisconsin, and mustered there on 28 Jan 1864. Private. Joined the WI 15th Inf Co K at Strawberry Plains, Virginia, 31 Mar 1864. Wounded in his left leg at New Hope Church, Georgia, 27 May 1864, and sent to hospital. He was later moved to Madison, Wisconsin. Assigned to Veteran Reserve Corps 20 Dec 1864. Mustered out at Davenport, Iowa, 18 Sep 1865. Post war: He was granted a pension of $14 a month because of the wound to his left leg. Olson died in 1894 at Madison, Wisconsin. Civil War: Served two years, holding rank of Second Lieutenant. Post war: After the war, he returned to the seminary. In 1868, he became the first Scandinavian pastor in Minneapolis. Married Kari Thomasdatter [1821-1907] on 8 Aug 1854 at Grue Kirke, Solor. Four children, three of whom were born in Norway. Came to America about 1864. Civil War: Served in the Union Army. Private. At naturalization, he changed his name to Ole Thompson. Died in Kandiyohi County, Minnesota, 9 May 1899. Buried at Green Lake Lutheran Cemetery, Kandiyohi County.
